About the role

The Technology branch supports National Archives in meeting its vision and achieving its strategic goals, through the provision of ICT services, technology, infrastructure, software, cybersecurity and the governance of its information and data assets. It is also responsible for assisting Australian Government agencies to fulfil the National Archives’ data and information management requirements.

The ICT Infrastructure section is responsible for providing advice to National Archives’ management on the efficient and effective use of technology and to enable National Archives staff through the provision and support of end user devices. The section also supports infrastructure relocation projects and is responsible for providing data storage infrastructure and managing its availability and capacity to meet business demands.

National Archives Desktop Services team is seeking to fill an ongoing Senior Desktop Engineer role in Canberra. A merit list will be created which may be used to fill ongoing positions.

 Under limited supervision and may provide technical guidance to others:

  • Lead the deployment, configuration and management of Windows endpoints using Intune and the organisation’s SOE, and contribute to the design, improvement and sustainment of endpoint management processes.
  • Develop and maintain advanced configuration, compliance and security policies, including BitLocker, AppLocker/WDAC and endpoint protection controls, ensuring alignment with ACSC Essential Eight and agency security standards.
  • Manage and quality‑assure application packaging, software deployment and patch releases, ensuring adherence to change management, testing and release governance practices.
  • Providing Level 2/3 troubleshooting, technical guidance and support to uplift Service Desk capability and ticket quality.
  • Prepare technical advice and recommendations to support hardware and software procurement, risk mitigation, compliance activities and security monitoring across the endpoint environment.
  • Maintain operational documentation and support continuous improvement, including SOPs, knowledge articles, planning activities, and mentoring to build capability within the Desktop Services team.
  • Apply the principles of APS Values, Code of Conduct, workplace diversity principles, work health and safety and participative management within a work and team environment.
  • Promote and apply the National Archives’ Vision, Mission and Commitments as expressed in in Strategy 2025–2030: Evolving National Archives and Our Values.

Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience administering Intune in an enterprise environment.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365, Entra ID and endpoint security controls.
  • Experience with application packaging, automation and advanced troubleshooting.

To be eligible for the role you must be an Australian citizen. If you are selected, you will be required to successfully undergo a pre-employment check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a Baseline security clearance with the ability to obtain NV2 if required.
