About the role
National Archives are seeking an Assistant Director Cyber Security to guide a team of analysts, oversee compliance with government security frameworks and strengthen the organisation’s overall cyber security posture. The role focuses on coordinating security operations, maintaining robust protective measures and providing expert advice, assurance and stakeholder engagement across the agency.
The Technology branch supports National Archives in meeting its vision and achieving its strategic goals, through the provision of ICT services, technology, infrastructure, software, cybersecurity and the governance of its information and data assets. It is also responsible for assisting Australian Government agencies to fulfil National Archives’ data and information management requirements.
Under limited direction the main duties of the role are to:
- Lead and oversee a team of Cyber Security Analysts to ensure National Archives systems comply with Australian Government policies, standards and best practices, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Liaise as the primary point of contact between the Agency ITSA and the Cyber Security team, coordinating work schedules, communicating ITSA directions and providing feedback from the team.
- Establish, develop and maintain effective, professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate and lead activities to monitor system security and support the application of the ACSC Information Security Manual (ISM) and Essential Eight mitigation strategies across National Archives’ sites, systems, services, servers and desktops.
- Provide expert advice on the development and review of cyber security documentation, procedures and policies to ensure they remain current, effective and aligned with the needs of the diverse program areas across National Archives.
- Undertake cyber security compliance activities and provide reports and independent assurance to executive and internal committees.
- Stay informed of emerging cyber security threats, technologies and developments, applying this knowledge to strengthen the organisation’s security posture.
- Promote and apply APS Values, the Code of Conduct, workplace diversity principles, work health and safety and participative management.
- Implement, promote and apply the National Archives’ Vision, Mission and Commitments as expressed in Strategy 2025–2030: Evolving National Archives and Our Values.
Qualifications or experience in the following areas are desirable (but not essential):
- Experience with security technologies such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems (preferably Sentinel and/or Splunk) and vulnerability management solutions (such as Tenable).
- Demonstrated experience responding to and investigating sensitive or complex cyber security incidents.
- Strong security awareness and risk‑management skills, with the ability to contextualise risk within National Archives threat environment.
- Ability to support IRAP assessor activities, including providing assessment evidence, liaising with stakeholders and reporting to the ITSA.
- Experience applying the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), Essential Eight Maturity Model and Information Security Manual (ISM) in government environments.
- Relevant qualifications or certifications in cyber security, or a proven history working in a cyber security role.
