The Access and Public Engagement branch is the public face of National Archives of Australia, ensuring an accessible, visible, and well-interpreted national archival collection. It delivers description, examination, reference and research services, exhibitions, education programs, publishing, websites, marketing, and events nationally.

Within this branch, the Communication, Marketing, Partnerships and Events section promotes National Archives through publishing, brand management, marketing, public relations, media, social media, partnerships, events, international engagement and the Member Program. This supports National Archives’ key role of providing an accessible national archival collection.

The Assistant Director Communication and Media is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies and plans and media campaigns to raise the profile of National Archives and its services nationally. The successful candidate will require highly developed written and oral communication skills and experience in media or PR.

Under broad direction, the main duties of the role are to:

  • Manage and lead media and communications within the team to deliver effective, professional and strategic outcomes within required timeframes, budgets and resources.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate innovative and engaging communications strategies and media campaigns to assist National Archives achieve its corporate priorities, strategic and business goals.
  • Manage media and public relations activities including issues management, media enquiries, media monitoring and preparing media releases and feature articles.
  • Build and maintain effective, professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including local and national media, cultural institutions and government agencies.
  • Develop communication plans and content for a range of channels and audiences including but not limited to corporate publications, speeches, long-form articles, multimedia and marketing collateral in liaison with the Assistant Director Marketing.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance to a small team responsible for varied but related functions, including internal communications.
  • Provide support to the Director-General, with a goal of increasing his presence amongst staff across all offices, in collaboration with business areas.
  • Provide strategic advice and support to the Director Communications, Marketing, Partnerships and Events and Assistant Director-General Access and Public Engagement on communication best practice.
  • Promote and apply the APS and National Archives values and contemporary people management principles and practices in diversity, workplace health and safety and participative management.
  • Promote and apply the National Archives’ Vision, Mission and Commitments as expressed in Strategy 2025–2030: Evolving National Archives and Our Values

Tertiary qualifications or professional experience in a relevant and/or related field are highly desirable.
