About the role

The Collection Management Branch is responsible for transferring, storing, preserving and digitising National Archives of Australia’s collection so it remains accessible for future generations. The Branch develops policies and systems as well as provides services, undertakes research, and implements projects to ensure the care, management and accessibility of archival records.

The Digitisation Services team provides leadership to the National Archives for digitisation. This includes the National digitisation strategy and annual plan, digitisation-on-demand service, Agency digitisation service and proactive digitisation of paper records. It excludes preservation digitisation of audio-visual and photographic formats. The Digitisation Services section is responsible for both in-house and outsourced digitisation in Canberra and provides guidance and oversight of digitisation activities to all state and territory offices.

Under broad direction, the main duties of the role are to:

  • Contribute to the strategic planning and development of agency objectives for the digitisation function
  • Provide leadership for national digitisation including:
    • prioritising digitisation activities
    • setting the strategic direction developing standards and procedures
    • Establishing and implementing long term operational plans
    • allocating resources
    • establishing and monitoring performance measures
    • reporting on digitisation outcomes.

  • Ensure the delivery of proactive digitisation projects to meet Government and community expectations including oversight of national and local projects through maintaining up to date knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and agency guidelines and regulations
  • Maintain an awareness of innovations in digitisation practices, build the National Archives’ digitisation capability and drive continuous service improvement practices.
  • Initiate, build and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expand and maintain partnerships with external digitisation providers and vendors to increase digitisation production and capacity.
  • Lead and manage a section with responsibility for establishing and promoting contemporary people management policy and practice to assist the National Archives to meet its strategic objectives.
  • Implement the Archives’ innovation, digital transformation and change agendas.
  • Manage the performance of staff and financial resources in accordance with National Archives' policies and guidelines.
  • Apply the principles of APS Values, Code of Conduct, workplace diversity, work health and safety and participative management within a work and team environment.
  • Apply the National Archives’ Vision, Mission and Commitments as expressed in Strategy 2025–2030: Evolving National Archives and Our Values.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the role you must be an Australian citizen. If you are selected, you will be required to successfully undergo a pre-employment check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a Negative Vetting Level 1 clearance level.
